The deployment of our troops to Iraq continues; to many, there seems to be no end in sight. Food supplies sustain these brave men and women, while our letters and e-mails keep their spirits high. What else can we do to help those who risk their lives on the war front? Below is the story of one man - a civilian - who is making a difference.
In a conversation with a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps, Mike (anonymity preferred), a former Marine, who is a resident of Alaska, asked, "What do you really need in the field?" Better communication between the American soldiers and the Iraqi people, he learned. The time pressure and burden on our government to provide a continuous stream of manpower overseas meant little time for thorough formal language training for our troops. Imagine eighteen- and nineteen-year-olds trying to keep peace with minimal or no knowledge of the language and culture. It was clear to Mike that an alternative training method - one that closes the fluency gap efficiently - would make a tremendous difference in facilitating and strengthening the relations between our soldiers and the Iraqis.
Mike set out to work. He contacted Total Recall Learning, an educational software company in San Diego, and shortly after, a partnership was forged. Mike would come up with the required financial funds, while Total Recall Learning would provide the resources to create a computer-based training program that facilitates the learning and long-term retention of Iraqi Arabic language and cultural customs.
Today the Quick Arabic program - with its 460+ questions broken down into seven easily-studied segments - is finished and made available to all U.S. troops and defense contractors - free of charge, thanks to Mike. Mike does not want any credit for doing this; he only wants to help out, he said. Even so, his act of generosity could save hundreds - even thousands - of lives, many of whom are fathers/moms, husbands/wives, sons/daughters, brothers/sisters, grandchildren, and friends. That is why we at Total Recall Learning and Mike want this story to be known.

Quick Arabic offers more than five hundred mission-critical Arabic terms and cultural concepts, presented in a time-staggered, multimedia learning environment. The training includes colloquial and specialized vocabulary words, such as those used for:

· Instructions
· Directions. Example: “Gu bel” (“Straight ahead”)
· Warnings
· Tactical questioning. Examples are: “Wain shúfet huhm?” (“Where did you see them?”) “Wain assiláh?” (“Where are the weapons?”)

Users also learn useful cultural tips that will facilitate and maintain friendly interactions with the Iraqis. Joanne -Thanks for the note. All is well here. Amazing progress over the last time I was deployed to Iraq. Today was the end of Ramadan and all of the families were out in force in their finest clothes. With the newsecurity in the Anbar Province has come a very cordial existence between the people and the Marines. Lots of smiles and waves all around. It is a totally different world than when I was last here in 2004-2005.

News: Lt. Colonel Dave Bellon Back in San Diego ...
I saw Dave when he was visiting the office (at Total Recall Learning) this past Wednesday. He looked well. He came back to San Diego for a couple of days before heading back to Amwar (sp?). We gave him the giant greeting cards with people's signatures and notes from the San Diego Fair. He was pleasantly surprised. When I asked him, "Do you have any words for your fans?" He laughed and said," Tell them that I am tan, rested, and ready."

San Diego, CA – June 29, 2007 – On July 3, Total Recall Learning Inc. will kick off a public letter-writing campaign to honor local military heroes Lieutenant Colonel David Bellon and the troops he commands. Total Recall will be collecting hand-written letters and notes at the Alliant International University’s booth display in the San Diego Pavilion at the San Diego Fair between 10 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The public can also post words of support at http://salutedavid.blogspot.com.
“Dave has exposed Total Recall to challenging opportunities and has been very supportive of enhancing the performance of his troops, others in the services and even students in the middle school thru high school. David is a true professional and an example of integrity and excellence. We already miss his insight, unique perspectives and smile. We will have a tough time picking up where he left off and are anxious to have him back!” said Dr. Tim Becker, President of the San Diego-based educational software company.
When he is not being deployed, Lieutenant Colonel David Bellon is the Vice President of Total Recall Learning. He is also the co-founder of Bellon and Lisiecki LLP, a law firm that serves military families and other residents of San Diego. Before starting his firm, Bellon served in the U.S. Marine Corps and then in the reserves and have already led his rifle battalion in two combat missions overseas in Iraq. A father of two, Bellon and his unit are currently completing pre-deployment training and will soon be called to active duty overseas.
In addition to submitting letters and notes at the booth, fair attendees can sign a giant greeting card that will be delivered to his family.
To thank the public for participating in the campaign, Total Recall will be giving out postcards with directions to download free software from the company’s website.
